Part Ten: The “Bromances” of Life (End)

Because they made love last night, Xia Zhi thought things were already resolved. They were lovers after all. Fighting while getting into bed and making up before falling asleep was normal for couples. Since they had done it last night and it had even been really good, he naturally thought that things had blown over.

Seeing Xiao Gui’s serious face at the moment, Xia Zhi was suddenly not so certain anymore. Still, he was reluctant to admit it. “No way. You definitely saw wrong.”

“It’s up to you whether you believe me or not.” Xiao Gui held her face in both hands with a bashful expression, “If you don’t keep watch on him, he’ll easily be snatched away by someone else. For example, I think he’s pretty great.”

Xia Zhi shuddered and said angrily, “He’s completely gay, he doesn’t like women!”

“Who told you that?”

“He can’t get hard with women…”

Xia Zhi’s explanation was interrupted by a cough. He saw Ye Qia standing behind Xiao Gui, gesturing to him and he suddenly realized what was going on. “You set me up!”

Xiao Gui made a face at him, slipping away as she said, “I didn’t say he was angry just to set you up! I’m out of here!”

The room grew quiet. Xia Zhi watched as Ye Qia walked around and tidied up, not knowing what to say.

As Ye Qia wiped the table, he suddenly said, “Sometimes, I wished you were an M.”

Startled, Xia Zhi asked in confusion, “Huh?”

“Then I could discipline you. You would never leave me or betray me, and you would do as you’re told.” Ye Qia calmly concluded, then turned the topic, “But then you wouldn’t be you. You’re always…giving me trouble, angering me half to death, and yet you make it impossible for me to let go of you.”

As Xia Zhi listened, he felt uneasy all over. When he finished listening, he was silent for long time before saying with uncertainty, “What you mean is, you really like me?”

“Yes.” Ye Qia said slowly. “Although I think a confession of this sort will only encourage your rampant arrogance, I think I do love you very much. I’m willing to put up with these things for you, willing to be unable to come back home for you, willing…”

This time it was Ye Qia that was cut off. Xia Zhi rushed over without waiting for him to finish and kissed him on the mouth, using practically all of his skill and his ability to seduce.

When it was over, Ye Qia licked his lips and said in evaluation, “I give it a 3.”

Xia Zhi wasn’t angry. On the contrary, he was all smiles as he said, “Don’t worry, I love you, too. I love you so much I…oh, I can’t stand it. Let me tell you, I didn’t have much interest in sex before, but ever since being with you, I get hard right away as long as you reveal a bit of skin! Really!”

Ye Qia rolled his eyes. “I don’t even have to take my clothes off to make people hard.”

“That’s different! Those people simply want to sleep with you. I love you as a person! Even if you’re barefoot and wearing worn out underwear—oh by the way, there’s a hole in your underwear with the bear print, I threw it out.” Meeting Ye Qia’s stare, Xia Zhi quickly got back on topic, “Basically, I love you no matter how you are, even if you suddenly get a sex change…oh, a sex change might be a deal breaker. Sex change aside, I can handle anything else. I let you manage my wages. All of my liquid and non-liquid assets are in your hands. Don’t I even let you fuck me whenever you want? And it’s still not enough?”

Not receiving an answer, Xia Zhi racked his brains for a long time. Ye Qia remained looking unmoved and Xia Zhi was getting a headache. He thought and he thought, and finally said in exasperation, “What else do you want me to do?”

“Kneel.”

Xia Zhi didn’t understand and so he knelt.

“Hug my leg.”

He was very happy to do this.

“Bark a few times for me.”

“…”

Xia Zhi’s eyes grew big. He abruptly got up and lunged at Ye Qia’s head, grabbing him as he opened his mouth and bit him. He really liked having Ye Qia’s tongue in his mouth. It was inexplicably pleasurable, like sucking on a lollipop. Ye Qia often teased him about not getting enough milk to drink when he was young and wanting to suck on things for no reason.

As the two were stuck together, a shriek came from the front door. “What are you two doing?”

Xia Zhi shoved Ye Qia away with lightning speed, shocked to discover his mother and aunt standing at the door. His mother’s face was ashen while his aunt appeared as if she couldn’t bear to look.

“Mom, m-mom, t-this is…”

Ye Qia zipped in front of Xia Zhi and said calmly, “Auntie, some dust flew into Xia Zhi’s eye. I was blowing it for him.”

Fuck me, even this is can be used as an excuse?!

Xia Zhi had just cursed inwardly when he heard his mother say, “Oh, is that what’s going on? Xiao Zhi, you really are too careless, making so much trouble for others.”

Mom, just what do you want?!

Xia Zhi watched as his mother and aunt went into the kitchen, then he turned his gaze towards Ye Qia in shock only to see Ye Qia mouth the word to him: Idiot.

“…”

The situation at home finally stabilized. Though Xia Zhi had endless worries concerning the sudden appearance of these three women, in the end, they were all blood relatives. After not having met for a few years, they got along alright, and rather the problem now was on the outside.

“How many days do you intend to take off from work?” Ye Qia asked Xia Zhi. They had nothing to do so they hid in the bedroom, letting the women have the rest of the space. “You’ve been on leave for a week, right?”

“Does Wang Ke have any news?”

“Probably not yet completely resolved, but at least the newspapers aren’t reporting about you anymore.” Ye Qia said, “However you also need to be mentally prepared. Your coworkers are certainly not like your mother.”

Xia Zhi immediately looked distressed. There were indeed several coworkers who had called him these past few days, fishing for information. No one asked him about the actual circumstances, as if tip-toeing around the subject.

“Do you think I should just come out of the closet?”

“No need.” Ye Qia gave an unexpected answer. “What I mean is, you don’t need to go out of your way to tell every person ‘I’m gay.’ Go with the flow. Whether you’re gay or not should have nothing to do with your work, correct?”

“That’s true…”

Xia Zhi eventually went to work because the director threatened to fire him if he didn’t show up. No matter what, he’d had this job for many years and he was settled into it in every aspect. He really did not want to resign and find a new job. Despite the fact he had walked this road to work countless times, this time he couldn’t stay calm, feeling like a nervous wreck as if it were his first day of work.

On the way there, he felt as if everyone was staring at him. Once he got into work, he suddenly felt the gazes of others like countless needles flying his way, piercing him into a hedgehog.

He stood at the door in a daze until the director came out. “What are you standing there for? Get to work.”

Xia Zhi rushed over to his work desk and stared in shock at the stack of documents practically taller than himself. All his coworkers looked indifferent. He sighed and began to sort it out in resignation. Just as he took the document at the very top of the heap, the stack of documents suddenly exploded and the strongest man from the debt collection department jumped out in swim briefs, exclaiming excitedly, “Happy coming out!!”

The office went wild and erupted into applause as Xia Zhi stood still in a daze, staring as countless smiling faces surrounded him. Slowly, his eyes grew misty.

“I love my life,” He murmured, joining the exuberant crowd.
