Chapter 44 – Making Chicken Soup to Heal the Body

When Ji Jianyun finished relieving himself, Su Danhong helped him back into the bed and she wiped his hands with a towel.

Ji Jianyun looked at his wife. He didn’t hide his leg injury just now, and was limping. He thought his wife would say something about it, but she didn’t.

He asked a question to see how she felt. “Honey, did you notice my leg?”

“I did.” Su Danhong looked up at him.

“Then…” Ji Jianyun stopped talking and stared at her.

Su Danhong raised an eyebrow. “What is it? Did you think you don’t deserve me and you want me to find a better man? Did you want to let me go off on my own?”

She said the difficult thoughts Ji Jianyun had out loud. Moreover, he really thought it was true. He really thought he was a disabled person…

“Ji Jianyun, you really are wonderful.” Su Danhong was angry and glared at him. “You don’t want your wife and child because of this injury? Are you sure you don’t want us? I can tell you that you can’t find someone else like me in the village. If you don’t want to live with me, then we will…”

“Danhong, I do, I want to live with you! I’m just worried that you won’t like me anymore. Now that I’m like this, I really don’t deserve you,” Ji Jianyun clarified.

How could he bear letting his beautiful, precious wife go? If it was his original wife, then he might have really let her go. However, the current Su Danhong was his wife, so how could he give her up? Even if he was to blame, he would not leave her. She was also carrying their child in her belly. He would never let go of his child.

“If you want to live your life with me, then pull yourself together. I can’t take care of you for that long with the baby coming. I’ll give you at least two weeks. So rest up and recover from your injuries because later you will have to take care of me and the child,” Su Danhong said without any gentleness.

Even though Ji Jianyun was being glared at by his wife, he felt relieved and the stone weighing him down was let go.

His wife had told him that she would not stop living with him, and that she would stay with him!

“As for what you said about resigning, just do it. What’s wrong with that? When you were asked to work, you did it, but if you can’t do it now, then just return home. Anyways, our family needs you. Don’t you think so?” Su Danhong said as she picked up a needle.

Even though Su Danhong was upset with her husband, she was also happy. Ji Jianyun’s resignation was an honorable one since it was for his service to his unit. If it didn’t happen like this, then she didn’t know when they would be able to live as a real couple. The cost of his resignation was big, but it meant that he had returned safely.

Therefore, Su Danhong was happy as long as her husband came back safely.

“Danhong.” Ji Jianyun looked at her again.

“What is it? Are you touched?” Su Danhong hit the bullseye. “If you dare to not be good to me in the future, then I will certainly make you regret it!”

“Danhong, I will definitely be good to you. I will be good to you all my life,” Ji Jianyun quickly expressed his dedication.

Su Danhong gave a faint “mhm” and poured him a glass of spiritual spring water. She told him to drink it, and then she peeled and cut up an apple for him. She fed it to him, and the couple ate one apple each.

Su Danhong told him about the orchard. “You can’t walk for too long with your injury, so don’t go yet. But you’ll be surprised when you see it. Everyone in the village who saw it was surprised.”

“My wife is still incredible. My parents were not able to grow anything, but you were able to when the land was in your hands,” Ji Jianyun said with a smile.

Su Danhong glanced at him, and then accepted the generous compliment. “But don’t talk about it. The villagers say that I have a prosperous family, and that you can do anything. The villagers look at our family’s Da Hei and the other dogs in envy. They say I raised them well. The dogs are intelligent and protect me very well.”

Ji Jianyun smiled and nodded. “Yes, the dogs are good, they are just as good as our special units.”

“You can train Da Hei when you recover from your injury. Da Hei will certainly be good at protecting our home,” Su Dahong stated.

“Okay.” Ji Jianyun nodded and asked about fencing the mountain. “Our mountain is not small. It will cost a lot of money if we build it. Do we have enough money for it?”

His wife gave out 500 yuan on New Years, and then she bought the fruit saplings and hired people to plant them. Thus, didn’t they need money?

They had spent almost all the money they had before, right?

“Don’t worry about the money. I’m almost done with this piece of embroidery. I should be able to sell it for about 400 yuan. I still have 400 yuan stored away. Oh, and I just gave father 600 yuan a few days ago, which is enough to cover the fencing for a while. Cement and bricks are not very expensive. Labor is cheap, they are only paid ten yuan a month,” Su Danhong said.

Currently, the orchard was being stood up. Su Danhong was very satisfied with Father Ji’s  efficiency in getting the brick wall built. It was more than two meters high and while it didn’t seem very wide, it was 30 centimeters wide.

But Ji Jianyun frowned when he heard this. “This works out, but wouldn’t it take more than 1,000 yuan to set up the brick wall?”

“Once this brick wall is built, it will last for many years. If we don’t, then almost all the people in the village and surrounding villages will more or less be our neighbors. In the future, how can we let those half grown men cause a disaster when our orchard has fruits?” Su Danhong said.

Ji Jianyun nodded.

This was their orchard, and it was very rare in the area. While things were fine now, there would be trouble next year if they did not fence it.

That’s why the money needed to be spent.

“When I’m healed, I’ll help!” Ji Jianyun said at once.

“Take it easy. I don’t want you to do that kind of work when I spend about ten yuan a month to hire people to do it. Isn’t it exhausting? You’re going to stay in our village from now on, so why would you be afraid of not having a job?” Su Danhong said to him.

The husband and wife discussed things until it was almost two o’clock. Su Danhong went to bring the black chicken soup1. Ji Jianyun let her eat a bowl of soup before eating the rest of the chicken soup.

He always had a big appetite. The three bowls of red jujube congee for lunch had already disappeared from his stomach.

After they ate, Su Danhong took a nap with him. An hour later, Su Danhong got up by herself, and let Ji Jianyun continue to sleep.

Su Danhong went to make food. The dinner was mainly light, but she still gave him a bit of beef stew so that he did not have to always eat bland food.

After stewing the beef, Su Danhong went to look for Mother Ji.

Su Danhong told Mother Ji the truth about Ji Jianyun. She couldn’t hide his situation because he had to continue eating the chicken soup to heal his body.

Mother Ji was very worried, but she felt better when she heard that he was safe and just needed to rest for a while.

“He can’t work in his unit anymore?”

With regards to this, Mother Ji was still a little disappointed. She thought he would have been rewarded for his service.
