Chapter 56 – Raising Lambs

Su Danhong had already discussed buying apartments with Ji Jianyun and only Hong Jie knew about it. She didn’t tell anyone else. Even if she wanted to, it would be a matter for the future.

“Then rest well. Mother will send the consent form to the village head,” Mother Ji said.

“Okay.” Su Danhong nodded.

After Mother Ji left, Su Danhong looked at the time and went to the kitchen to prepare a meal.

She had lunch alone and immediately filled herself with pork dumplings.

Before, she rarely ate pork, but now she couldn’t get enough. Since she was pregnant with the little baby, she developed meat cravings. Her cravings were not limited to pork, but she also wanted other types of meat, fish, and eggs. She did not have that many vegetable cravings.

She ate two bowls of dumplings before making some snacks for Da Hei.

Like the three dogs on the mountain, Da Hei was fed two times a day: once in the morning and then in the evening.

Even though it was like this, Mother Ji was very distressed every time she saw it.

The four dogs ate a lot of food. They also ate lavish meals that were better than other people. But despite Mother Ji being distressed at this, she couldn’t help but praise them each time when she saw how intelligent they were in protecting their owners. It was complicated.

Mother Ji felt that the reason that the four dogs were so intelligent was because their food was so good. The quality of their meals was simply not the same as the other dogs in the village.

After lunch, Su Danhong sewed another pair of small socks for the baby. It was necessary as winter was coming.

Then, she took a nap but she did not dare to sleep too long. After almost napping for an hour, she got up and went outside for some exercise. She went to the backyard to pick some herbs. These herbs grew well and had a distinctive flavor because they were all watered by the spiritual spring water.

Su Danhong took some herbs and went to the old Ji’s house.

Mother Ji was repairing the sheep pen. When they were younger, the old Ji family were also sheep farmers, but they did not do it anymore.

“Mother, what are you doing with the sheep pen?” Su Danhong asked.

When Mother Ji saw her coming, she smiled and said, “Mother wants to buy two lambs to raise. Danhong, what do you think?”

Hearing this, Su Danhong agreed. “Sounds good.” Sheeps were easy to keep. There was a lot of grass growing on the mountain that the sheep could eat. Father Ji went up the mountain every day, so there was no need to worry about raising the lambs when she could ask him to take them with him.

However, in order to prevent the lambs from pooping everywhere, she would need Xiao Bai to look after them a bit.

But she didn’t dare say that, or else her mother-in-law would have called it unreasonable. Su Danhong was a bit obsessed with cleanliness, and she couldn’t stand the thought of stepping in sheep dung, even if the sheep dung in itself was not smelly.

Upon hearing her response, Mother Ji was also very happy. She watched her throw the herbs into the chicken coop. The hens immediately pecked it and ate as if they had been starved for days. Mother Ji said, “Mother also went out to pull a few plants. I threw it into the coop, but they didn’t like it. What you give them is like treasure to them.”

Su Danhong giggled. “Those were not grown in our yard. Our land’s feng shui is better than other places, so the things that grow from our yard are also better.”

“This is true. The vegetables grown on your side are tender and sweet even without using fertilizer,” Mother Ji said.

The vegetable garden in Su Danhong’s backyard was created by Mother Ji. In the past, when Su Danhong saw that Mother Ji was going to use fertilizer, she pretended to be offended and did not let her do it. This was because it was her yard and it would smell too much.

Mother Ji acquiesced and just grew it normally. Who would have known that when the vegetables were grown and picked, it tasted surprisingly good.

After that, Mother Ji guessed that the Great Fox Immortal just didn’t like the smell of fertilizer, so she didn’t concern herself with this matter anymore. If she didn’t apply fertilizer and it would still taste this delicious, then it was better.

“By the way, do you have enough money to buy the lambs?” Su Danhong asked.

“Yes, there’s still some money,” Mother Ji said with a smile.

She did not think that Lao San’s wife was just being polite. Generally, if she wasn’t willing, according to her personality, she wouldn’t ask. This was how she was different from Lao Da’s wife. Lao Er’s wife and Lao Si’s wife would stay away as soon as they heard of this kind of thing but when the sheep grew up, these two would butter up Mother Ji.

Mother Ji didn’t say it outloud, but she knew this in her heart.

“Mother, just raise two more. Later, it will be convenient to put them on the mountain. I’ll go back and get the money for you later,” Su Danhong said.

“Okay.” Mother Ji was thinking the same thing, so she agreed to it.

After feeding the chicken, Su Danhong talked to Mother Ji for a while and then went to her house.

It was almost 4:30. She cooked two pieces of pork belly, and when it was finished, she took one, and brought it along with some money for the lamb.

“You don’t need to give me so much money,” Mother Ji took the meat, but as for the 20 yuan, she refused.

Twenty yuan was enough to buy four.

“Mother, just take it and buy the lambs. If my sisters-in-law cause a problem, then you can just say that I am the one raising them,” Su Danhong said and smiled.

Mother Ji hesitated for a moment before she took the money and said, “Okay, then mother will take it. Mother still has some money, so if you are strapped for money, just tell me.”

“Thank you, mother,” Su Danhong replied with a smile.

Su Danhong and Mother Ji packed a small jar of pickled vegetables. It was prepared to be cooked with meat. Ji Jianyun liked to eat this dish, and she did too.

Ji Jianyun came home at around six o’clock.

“You’ve been gone all day. Are you tired?” Su Danhong asked and quickly gave him a cup of warm water.

“I’m not tired. This little task? It’s nothing compared to our missions,”  Ji Jianyun said with a smile. He drank a mouthful of warm spiritual spring water. He didn’t know if it was just his illusion, but he felt that his health was getting better and better now.

Of course, it had to be because his wife took care of him. He sniffed the air. He didn’t know what delicious food she was cooking, but it smelled good.

“Honey, it’s all taken care of. I bought two apartments. It was 6,400 yuan all together.” Ji Jianyun took out a folder. There were two titles and many receipts. Everything was complete.

Su Danhong took it and looked through it. She was very satisfied. The purchase was similar to what she had bought in Jiangshui City. It was all 108 square feet, but the price was almost 1,000 yuan more expensive.

But it didn’t matter. The housing prices in a college town were indeed higher than that in Jiangshui City. If it were not for Hong Jie, they couldn’t have bought the places at that price.

“How many apartments did Sister Hong buy?” Su Danhong asked.

“She also bought two,” Ji Jianyun replied.

He did not buy both apartments in the same building. They were in Building 11 and Building 12, but on the same floor.

The floors were different from when Su Danhong bought the apartments in Jiangshui City. She bought the one on the seventh floor because she had this view of seven goes up, while eight goes down1 and she liked the seventh floor.

Although the seventh floor was very good, it was also a bit bad. At this moment, elevators were not available. They would have to climb the stairs up to the seventh floor.

So this time, Ji Jianyun chose a relatively lower floor. He chose the fifth floor for both apartments. The fifth floor was still acceptable.

Footnotes

七上八下(qī shàng bā xià) – it comes from an idiom that means an unsettled state of mind. In relation to fengshui and buildings, it means seven will bring fortune because you are rising up, while eight means you will lose fortune because you are sinking down.
