Chapter 60 – The Old Hu Family That Grows Flowers

Ji Jianyun went to the town with the college early in the morning, and Aunt Yang came over when she was free.

“I’m sorry to bother you, Aunt Yang. I told him that there was no need, and that he just needed to hurry up and go. After all there’s still half a month left until the due date, but he didn’t listen. He’s always making a fuss over nothing,” Su Danhong said.

Aunt Yang smiled. “So you’re saying that your man is doting on you and you are still not happy? This is the first time Aunt has seen Jianyun like this. You’re a fortunate one.”

Take a look at the men from their village. One could even include the men from other villages, which one spoiled their wife like Jianyun did?

A second one simply could not be found.

He looked after her everyday and was worried that an accident might occur. But she was at home, so what could possibly happen?

When all was said and done, Jianyun loved his wife.

Oh, for women, it depended on whether or not she had luck. If she did, then she would marry a considerate man. If she could take care of the home inside and out, then that was guaranteed happiness for a lifetime.

Of course, a woman had to be good at taking care of the home or even a good marriage would fail.

For example, Aunt Yang was extremely satisfied with Su Danhong. Jianyun, that child, loved Danhong and there was a good reason for that.

Aside from the fact that Danhong was pretty, she also brought prosperity to their family and her embroidery skills were the best proof of that.

Others might not know, but Aunt Yang had a very good relationship with Mother Ji, and Aunt Yang had heard Mother Ji say:

The reason why this orchard was started was because of Danhong.

Otherwise, even if Jianyun could start it, he would not be able to start it on such a big mountain.

Aunt Yang told Su Danhong about some of the happenings in the village, such as which family had a good harvest this year, which family was filled with lazy people, and other families where some could not keep up with the others.

“It used to be like that in the commune1 in the past, but now some do their own work and some act presumptuously,” Aunt Yang stated.

Su Danhong smiled and said, “Let’s just live our own lives and not bother with the affairs of other people.”

Aunt Yang nodded. “That’s best. By the way, Danhong, I am going to go to your yard to pick some herbs to go back and feed the chickens.”

“Okay, there’s so many of them anyways.” Su Danhong said.

They sat together doing needlework, but after a while they couldn’t sit still. Thus, they went to the backyard to pick some herbs.

“The herbs you’ve grown have a strong medicinal scent.” Aunt Yang praised.

A wife that brought prosperity to the family truly brought a lot of it. Look, the herbs conveniently grown here were better than those grown outside.

Su Danhong smiled. “Aunt, pick some yu choy sum2 and give it to Uncle Yang to eat. He loves to eat yu choy sum.”

“He doesn’t need it,” Aunt Yang said and didn’t pick any. “We have some at home.”

“Just pick some, there’s so much here that we can’t eat it all. We shouldn’t let it grow old,” Su Danhong said.

As soon as Aunt Yang saw that there was a lot of it, she said, “Then aunt will pick some and go back.”

She didn’t take a lot, just enough for the two of them to eat.

After Aunt Yang picked some yu choy sum, she went home. She asked Su Danhong to eat with them and to not cook since she was alone.

Su Danhong said with a smile that Ji Jianyun had made dumplings for her the night before and had put them in the refrigerator. She’d just boil some and it’d be fine.

Aunt Yang smiled, and she didn’t say more.

Mother Ji came over at noon. As soon as she heard that Ji Jianyun had gone to the college town, she was very frustrated.

“Eh, you two, when you have some money in your hands you will just want to use it up. Once this child is born, everything will need money. Next year, you will need to buy young chicks too. The chick feed is just one thing, and if you start raising lambs, then you have to buy a batch of them. You are really going to spend a lot of money.” Mother Ji complained.

It’s just a child, so what kind of diaper do you need?

None of the children in the village used disposable diapers, so why did they need to use them?

Not to mention the village, even her granddaughter in Lao Si’s family did not use disposable diapers. It was not cheap. Children eat, sleep, then eat again and poop all day. How many diapers would be needed?

“I told him not to go, too. He said he couldn’t treat our child badly, and there was nothing I could do about it.” Without a second thought, Su Danhong smoothly pushed all the blame to Ji Jianyun, and felt no psychological burden at all.

Mother Ji was just a nagger. In fact, how could she not know that her Lao San was a man who was dominated by his wife?

If Danhong disagreed, would he still go?

However, Danhong rarely interfered with his affairs. Jianyun usually made up his mind about things as she watched from the sidelines.

Mother Ji remembered something and pointed at the orchid grass3 on a pole bucket and said,“I brought you an orchid, so you can keep it for fun.”

Su Danhong’s eyes lit up. “Mother, where did this orchid grass come from?”

“Where else could it come from? I saw it while weeding the field today. I thought you would like it, so I brought it back to you,” Mother Ji replied with a smile.

“Thank you so much, mother!” Su Danhong said happily.

Mother Ji said, “Where do you want to plant it? Mother will plant it for you.”

“Let’s plant it in the backyard first,” Su Danhong said.

Mother Ji helped her plant it in the backyard and said, “Orchid grass is very rare, and people from the city like it. In the past, there were people in our village who grew flowers and sold them.”

“They still do this?” Su Danhong was surprised.

“Oh, yes. There is the old Hu family who live at the end of the village. In the past, old man Hu was the gardener of a landlord family. Later, he made a living by growing flowers, and now he still grows them. You don’t go there a lot so you won’t know. The old Hu family is considered a rich family in the village,” Mother Ji explained.

“Then their family must have a lot of flowers, right?” Su Danhong didn’t pay attention to anything else. Her eyes were somewhat shining.

It was true that the original owner never went to the end of the village. When she got married, she was always thinking about not letting the other three families take even the slightest bit of Father Ji and Mother Ji’s wealth out of fear that she would get less of it. How could she be daydreaming about anything else?

“They do. Mother doesn’t know the Hu family very well.” Mother Ji saw what she was thinking: she wanted to plant flowers. Mother Ji was a little moved and said, “These flowers do not grow easily.”

It was not easy to grow, but she did not know whether Danhong could grow it or not. When she thought of the orchard on the mountain, Mother Ji couldn’t help but take a closer look at her daughter-in-law. She did not know whether the Great Fox Immortal was willing to help grow the flowers.

If she was willing to help grow the flowers, then it was good. If they could grow flowers, then they could make a lot of money. Just the year before last, the old Hu family renovated a big courtyard from growing flowers and it was almost one of the best in the village.

Neither Jianyun nor Danhong were willing to save money and hold onto it. Thus, shouldn’t they open up more ways to make more money?

“Mother, do we have a bad relationship with their family?” Su Danhong asked.

“Not really. When the Hu family’s daughter got married the year before last, your father went to help them build a big wardrobe. He also made it a lot cheaper,” Mother Su said.

“Then that will do! Let’s go to the Hu family and have a look,” Su Danhong said and smiled.

Mother Ji also had an impatient temper. As soon as she heard the way Danhong spoke, she knew that the Great Fox Immortal must be willing to help raise flowers. Mother Ji had always longed for an income like that of the old Hu family gained from growing flowers.

She knew that a valuable flower could sell for a lot of money. It was at least a few dozen yuan, maybe even more than that. It was no secret in the village when the old Hu family called a big truck over to transport a lot of flowers.
