TL: Moonlit

It was already five months later when Lin Hanchuan received news from the Yan family.

During this period, Lin Hanchuan had no time to pay attention to the progress of the Yan family’s affairs. The filming of the movie «Wukong» had already been completed, and the film had officially entered the post-production and promotion stage.

Lin Hanchuan had to negotiate with the special effects company, coordinate with theaters for promotion, select video platforms, and handle various other tasks. He was extremely busy, with no time to spare. Even his sleeping hours were constantly compressed, leaving no room to focus on other trivial matters.

It was only during a break in his work that a collaborator mentioned it, and Lin Hanchuan suddenly realized that so much time had already passed.

After nearly half a year of legal battles, Yan Minghui was ultimately sentenced to seven years in prison for tax evasion.

“Why was he sentenced for such a long time?” Lin Hanchuan couldn’t understand.

The maximum sentence for tax evasion was seven years, and as long as Yan Minghui showed remorse, made up for the tax evasion, and paid the late fees, he would have received a maximum of five years.

The staff members in the theater industry were well-informed. One of them held a cigarette in his hand, sighed, and said, “It’s all because of his wife.”

From the other party’s words, Lin Hanchuan learned about the general course of events.

When Yan Minghui was unable to act in prison, he entrusted his wife to handle the fundraising for the fine, with his financial planner assisting her.

They sold properties, sold shares… and finally managed to gather 10 billion. Mother Yan had never seen so much money before, and when she saw this huge sum, she unexpectedly developed greed and was reluctant to hand over the money to the country.

The financial planner also noticed Mother Yan’s hesitation, so he came up with an idea: to divorce Yan Minghui and split his assets in half, allowing her to keep at least half of the wealth.

Mother Yan believed it and eagerly approached Yan Minghui to discuss the divorce matter. She earnestly persuaded him, and Yan Minghui, who was also in great pain, was convinced.

“Who would have thought that after the divorce, she would run away with 5 billion?” The staff member gossiped, blowing out a smoke ring, and couldn’t help but chuckle. “There are no loopholes in the country’s system. Whether they divorce or not, that 10 billion won’t escape.”

With Mother Yan running away with the money, Yan Minghui was left with only 5 billion and couldn’t come up with more to pay the late fees. In the end, because of the ‘particularly heinous nature of the crime, causing significant social impact,’ he was sentenced to the maximum term of seven years.

Lin Hanchuan’s brow furrowed slightly.

Mother Yan got married to Yan Minghui when she was in her twenties and had never experienced hardships in life. She may have been somewhat vain, selfish, and foolish. Even if she had the desire to run away with the money, she didn’t have the courage to do so.

“Your parents…” The staff member noticed Lin Hanchuan’s unusual expression. He extinguished his cigarette, patted Lin Hanchuan’s shoulder, and sighed as he comforted him, “Everyone in the industry knows what kind of parents you have. Don’t blame yourself too much.”

Lin Hanchuan snapped back to reality and gave a faint smile. “Let’s continue discussing the collaboration…”

The other person sensed the underlying meaning in his words and smoothly shifted the topic to work. Both of them tacitly agreed not to mention this matter again.

After reaching a mutual agreement, they signed the official contract, finally solidifying their collaboration and ending a month-long negotiation.

After the theater staff member left, Lin Hanchuan pondered. He dialed the internal line of the public relations manager and assigned the task of investigating the truth of the matter to a professional.

After hanging up the phone, Lin Hanchuan’s brow remained slightly furrowed as he contemplated something.

While lost in thought, the office door was cautiously knocked on a few times. Ling Hanchuan’s expression softened slightly, and a faint smile, barely detectable, appeared in his eyes. “Come in.”

Ran Xing pushed the door open and entered.

After completing filming, Ran Xing dyed his red hair back to black. Perhaps it was because he became a rising star or due to his flourishing career, his complexion became more rosy and vibrant. The whole person exuded an air of confidence and vitality, completely shedding the slight gloominess he had before.

At this moment, Ran Xing truly lived up to his fans’ descriptions as a shining star.

“What’s the matter?” Ling Hanchuan maintained a composed expression and coldly asked.

Ran Xing, with a playful look in his eyes, completely unaffected by Ling Hanchuan’s indifference, approached him. “I heard my agent has secured another film for me.”

Ran Xing felt proud in his heart. This was simply a perfect excuse that allowed him to come here openly!

Lin Hanchuan slightly raised an eyebrow and casually forwarded the script from his inbox to Ran Xing, saying, “Your agent has secured a low-budget art film for you.”

Most artists have a limited career lifespan, and although Ran Xing is currently in the spotlight, it doesn’t guarantee anything. He might become irrelevant in the entertainment industry next year or the year after, fading into obscurity amidst the crowd.

For the sake of exposure, many artists choose to buy their way onto the hot search rankings. They constantly try to stay in the spotlight to maintain their popularity.

This method seriously damages the reputation of the artists themselves. Most of the people who use this method are promoted by various companies as young and trendy idols. These companies have no real career plans for them; their only purpose is to make money.

Once an artist’s reputation is exhausted, the company quickly abandons them and swiftly promotes another rising star.

Lin Hanchuan is unwilling to do such things. This applies not only to Ran Xing but to every artist in the company. He personally oversees their career planning, striving to cultivate them as actors with longer professional careers rather than fleeting stars.

As an actor, the only thing that can maintain their popularity is their work.

“Then thank my agent for me.” Ran Xing smiled and said, “I will definitely perform well and not let him down.”

Ran Xing is not an ungrateful person. He knows that Lin Hanchuan wants him to film an art film, preferably with the opportunity to win an award and firmly establish himself in the film industry.

A faint smile appeared at the corner of Lin Hanchuan’s mouth as he gestured for Ran Xing to look at the script. “The director of this film is Director Guo Manjie.”

Guo Manjie is a specialized director of art films. Although his movies may not be box office hits, they are known for elevating the actors’ status. Regardless of the identities of the male and female leads, they can at least receive nominations for Best Actor or Best Actress.

In his most legendary film, the male and female leads, both students majoring in acting, swept all the top-tier awards domestically and internationally, becoming the Asian kings and queens of acting.

Ran Xing’s smile faded from his face. He knew that Lin Hanchuan wouldn’t give him an ordinary script, but he didn’t expect it to be this extraordinary.

“Guo Manjie!” There was a strange feeling in Ran Xing’s heart, a mix of being moved and intrigued. “President Yan, I will perform well and not disappoint you!”

Lin Hanchuan didn’t pay much attention to it. “Go back and prepare well.”

Ran Xing blinked his eyes and took a deep breath. He patted his blushing cheeks and muttered to himself, “Ran Xing, you have to work hard! Only when you win the Best Actor award will you have the qualification to stand by his side!”

The idea of confessing suddenly came out of nowhere, irresistible.

Lin Hanchuan has been so good to him, to the point that Ran Xing is filled with anxiety. He can’t imagine what he would do if one day Lin Hanchuan’s attitude towards him changes or if he starts treating someone else the same way he treats Ran Xing.

Ran Xing has always known that he has the blood of a wicked person running through his veins. The selfish, violent, and crazy blood flows within him. If Lin Hanchuan were to fall in love with someone else, he might become even more extreme than that wicked person.

Perhaps he would chain Lin Hanchuan to the bed… Ran Xing didn’t dare to bet, so he planned to take the initiative.

Even if the confession fails, he will have a blatant opportunity to pursue Lin Hanchuan. Thinking about it, Ran Xing’s mouth curved into a pleased smile.

Lin Hanchuan sensed something slightly amiss, but he couldn’t figure out what was strange about it. In the end, he let go of that feeling.

After finishing his work, there was still over an hour before the end of the workday. Lin Hanchuan picked up his coat and drove alone to a prison outside the city.

Upon seeing each other again, Yan Minghui looked completely different from the memories. His hair had turned mostly white, wrinkles lined the corners of his eyes, and the carefully maintained body of the past was no longer youthful, making him appear like a person in their fifties or sixties.

Lin Hanchuan suddenly spaced out. He remembered that Yan Minghui’s actual age was in his fifties. He had used money to freeze time.

“What are you here for?” Yan Minghui’s face was filled with weariness, and he no longer had the elegance and arrogance of the past. Instead, he exuded the unique frustration of a middle-aged man who had not achieved what he desired. “To laugh at my misfortune?”

“If that’s what you think, then you’re not entirely wrong,” Lin Hanchuan responded naturally, “It seems like you haven’t been having a good time in here.”

“You wretched child! I should have strangled you to death back then!” Yan Minghui suddenly raised his head, staring intensely at Lin Hanchuan.

The prison guards patrolling the room glanced around, and Yan Minghui instinctively avoided their gaze.

Noticing this, Lin Hanchuan sneered, “I’m here to tell you.”

Under Yan Minghui’s fierce gaze, Lin Hanchuan remained unmoved. He spoke slowly, word by word, “It was me who reported you.”

For a moment, Yan Minghui didn’t seem to comprehend, his gaze frozen.

After a few seconds, he suddenly reacted, overturning the table with a powerful punch and charging toward Lin Hanchuan with both fists and feet, exclaiming, “You traitor! What do you want! I want you dead!!”

Easily blocking Yan Minghui’s attack with a single hand, Lin Hanchuan smiled and disregarded the opponent’s furious outburst. “Back then, everyone in the company was your confidant. I couldn’t even access the company’s real financial records… Did you think I would take over the company without harboring the mindset of finding a scapegoat?”

Lin Hanchuan had only been in Yanshi Film Industry for a few days, but he already noticed discrepancies in the company’s accounts. Others might not have been able to detect it, but Lin Hanchuan was originally a CEO in his previous world.

Yan Minghui paused mid-sentence, and in the next second, he was pinned to the ground by the rushing prison guards, unable to move.

Desperately looking up at Lin Hanchuan, he cried out in hysteria, “I am your father! I am your parent! I gave you life, everything you have is mine…”

As Yan Minghui was taken back to the prison, his voice gradually faded away.

Lin Hanchuan coldly watched him being dragged away like a dead dog, a barely discernible smile forming at the corner of his mouth.

Only at this moment did the anger that had been weighing on Lin Hanchuan’s heart towards Yan Minghui, who had harmed Ran Xing, finally dissipate.
