Systemless in a Parallel World

29 Unfounded Arrogance

A small fountain of blood gushed out of his left arm as the black wolf's claw pierced through his skin, slicing off a chunk of flesh.

The black wolf would have inflicted an even worse injury if not for the shortsword that had pierced deep into the chest of the wolf.

Hot blood sprayed onto Zayn's face as he was thrown to the ground the moment the black wolf had pounced at him. Through the black wolf's actions and its thrashing, the silver iron shortsword was pushed deeper inside its organs, making it yelp miserably.

Zayn, however, couldn't be happy about that. He failed to anticipate the attack of the second black wolf and only noticed it when it had already been too late.

The black wolf's weight forced him to remain on the ground, the huge body suffocating him. It was not even possible for him to twist the silver iron sword in the chest of the monster because one of its paws lay on his right arm, preventing him from doing anything that could harm the wolf any further.

Zayn was just about to try kicking the monster in the stomach in an attempt to throw it away when the black wolf opened its maw wide. A row of razor-sharp fangs, smeared with the blood of the Frenzy Antelopes and small chunks of meat was inches away from his face. Its putrid breath fanned his face, making him gag.

At that moment, Zayn panicked a little bit.

He hardly remembered any memories from the past, and there was not a single past memory of bloody fights, let alone what would happen the moment he made a mistake, to guide him.

Zayn realized that he made a small mistake by acting too arrogantly and not concentrating completely on the battle. He expected the battle to end in an instant and that he would emerge victorious in the end.

After all, he was in possession of three Spirits, the Grimoire of the Ancient, some memories of his life in another world, and the God-like Zayn of this world had asked him to help.

Growing arrogant because of the latter was only obvious, but that was the biggest mistake he made from the beginning.

He was not the same person as he had been in his still unknown past life, and he was still weak…and a young teenager who had yet to grow up properly.

Zayn had been taking everything too lightly and the result was thrown straight at his face right now as the black wolf's head perked down, ready to tear him apart.

He was fortunate enough that the Sparrow Spirits had appeared by his side at this moment. They released two fire needles that were shot into the wolf's throat and one of its eyes when the wolf's jaw was about to snap his neck.

As the wolf was already gravely Injured and severely weakened, the wolf was unable to close its maw quickly enough. The smell of burned flesh permeated the air not long after but Zayn couldn't focus on that as he kicked the black wolf with all his might.

As for the other black wolf, it was just about to pounce upon Zayn as well when a large shield bashed against the wolf. The monster was dazed, and he was unable to move due to the injuries it had sustained along with the sudden attack.

This left the wolf incapable of deflecting the sudden impact that spread across its back, breaking the black wolf's spine into countless bone fragments.

The Human Spirit had come to Zayn's rescue and it was just about to charge over to the other black wolf when it saw that the wolf, which Zayn had kicked away, could barely move.

Zayn got up from the ground as quickly as he could, casting a careful look around as he made a sudden movement sequence to gather enough momentum to deliver a roundhouse kick against the staggering wolf's head.

"Fucking bastard…" He grumbled while his chest was heaving heavily. Zayn was taking a few deep breaths as he took a quick look around the battlefield.

A few black wolves were writhing in pain and trying to move but their bones were crushed. As for the black wolf in front of him, Zayn stomped on its neck while circulating his entire pool of soul particles through his leg.

The black wolf's neck snapped but Zayn was not satisfied with the result. He grasped the silver iron shortsword that was still stuck into the wolf, just to drive it deeper into the wolf's chest before he twisted it with all his might.

Only then did the black wolf stop twitching. The monster's body went slack and a Soul Wisp emerged from within the body not long after.

Zayn grasped it with his left hand while pulling the shortsword out of the corpse. He grit his teeth while trying to ignore the pain in his left arm but that was easier said than done.

The claws of the black wolf had dug deep inside his flesh, which was also how Zayn knew that the small fortune he had earned today would be wasted entirely.

"I know I shouldn't complain…but my poor money…" He cursed, understanding the cost of the injury. Waiting for it to heal normally was a waste of precious time and it might be infected as well. Cleaning it and bandaging the wound might be enough to tend to the wound but Zayn didn't have the liberty to not use his left arm for several weeks.

'At least there is a Priest Apprentice in the Town,' Zayn recalled as he went over to the other writhing wolf bodies. He ended their lives, devoured the soul particles of their Soul Wisps and began to work.

Dismantling the bodies was not exactly his field of expertise. Zayn was sure that he could dissect the bodies cleanly and retrieve the most valuable assets…if he had enough place to store them.

Unfortunately, he was not as wealthy as the Normie King, which is also why he was not in possession of excellent equipment such as a Storage Artifact.

That was why Zayn could only collect the most valuable, and smaller assets of the Frenzy Antelopes and the Black Wolves which were easy for him to carry. The horns, fangs, and claws were tightly secured in his backpack, filling it in its entirety.

'This fur is so fluffy…it's definitely worth a lot…but I cannot carry it around easily…and there might be more mons—...' Zayn was just about to mutter about the commotion caused by other monsters when he heard a furious howling from further away.

The Sparrow Spirits whose soul particles had been drained almost entirely were weakly scouting the surrounding area. They gave him a bird's eye view of the memory much like CCTV footage of the area after landing on his shoulders. That was when Zayn knew that it was time to leave, without the wolf's fur.

He bandaged his wound and returned back to the town.

His Spirits were tightly secured in the Grimoire of the Ancient, and Zayn rushed through the shadows of the dusk to enter his room in the Inn and store the iron mace and the large shield.

Afterward, he decided to take a tour of the city.

There was still a wound that had to be tended to, and money that had to be earned at the Merchant's shop!
