Chapter 19 – Ji Jianyun is Back

Time was moving forward and it was approaching the end of the year.

Today, the village killed the pigs. Su Danhong had not seen the killing of the pigs with her own eyes, so she followed Aunt Yang to see it.

She thought she would be scared, but it turned out that she was thinking too much.

Her adaptability was so good that she didn’t feel anything at all when she saw it. Instead, she was full of thoughts about whether to get a whole pig back or half a pig.

In the end, she decided on half a pig.

A total of six pigs were killed in the village this time. Su Danhong asked for half a pig, which made many people in the village look with envy.

Mother Ji wanted a pig head, the stomach, and two parts of the intestines. This was all in demand, but considering how Su Danhong asked for half a pig, it was given to her.

Feng Fangfang and Ji Mudan, these two sister-in-laws, both had a twinkle in their eyes when they saw this and immediately went over there together.

“Danhong, you can’t finish this for the New Year when you bought so much. Why don’t you give us a few jin? Big Wazi has a craving for meat recently,” Feng Fangfang requested.

“Yes, Danhong, give a few jin to us. You and Jianyun can’t finish this much,” Ji Mudan echoed.

“Eldest sister-in-law, second sister-in-law, there is still a lot over there. If you want, you can buy it from there. I’ll give some of these to my parents and some to my mother’s side. Afterwards, there’s not much left.” Su Danhong smiled and refused to give any away.

How could she not know what these two meant? On ordinary days, from time to time, they would go over to their parents and hit the autumn wind1 for granted. Right now they were trying to hit over her head.

But this head could not be hit open. She wouldn’t let them because it was a matter of principle!

Feng Fangfang and Ji Mudan received a minor scolding. They could only purse their lips and go over there to buy a few jin, which was more than what they were willing to spend for.

Su Danhong asked the butcher to chop up the ribs and meat for her. She pushed a small cart to go home.

This cart was something Father Ji made during his spare time to give to her.

When she got home, she took out more than ten jin of meat for Father Ji and Mother Ji and prepared another ten jin for her maternal family. After organizing everything, there was still half left. She was going to save the rest to prepare for her Jianyun.

After giving meat to the two families, she went back and began to get busy.

The yard was thick with the scent of pork balls and beef balls2.

Old man Yang and Aunt Yang from next door smelled it. Aunt Yang knocked on her door and learned that she was making meatballs, so she helped her.

She was able to work a lot faster with Aunt Yang’s help. They worked for two days and prepared a large pot of beef balls and a large pot of pork balls. Su Danhong used a pot of soup to scoop up a mix of both types of meat balls.

As for Father Ji and Mother Ji, she also sent some to give them a taste, and she kept the rest.

There were also fried ribs and dumplings with all kinds of stuffing. It would be the New Year in a few days and these things had to be prepared. It was cold these days, so she was not scared that things would be spoiled.

When she was so busy, time passed quickly, and the whole kitchen was full of food.

Everything at home was tidy. Xiao Hei had been patrolling every corner of the yard. Recently, Su Danhong did not tie him up and he did not like to run out. At most, he would stand at the door and look out. He was extremely protective of the home.

Every time someone came over, he would block their path. No one could come in just like that.

Aunt Yang had been here several times, but she still received the same treatment. Aunt Yang complained about this several times, but it was useless. Xiao Hei still went his own way and did not let her in just because she was an acquaintance.

It snowed heavily that night after the pigs were killed. This was the third snowfall of the year.

The snow kept falling until the night before New Year’s Eve. Su Danhong was a little worried that it would be dangerous for Ji Jianyun to come back if it snowed too much, and she was a little worried about whether he would make it back in time.

In the middle of the night, Xiao Hei let out a howl and it was obvious that he was fighting with someone. Su Danhong was startled and immediately got up. She got dressed and came out with a stick.

“You really have the guts to touch my home?! I think you’re asking for trouble!” Su Danhong opened the door with a shout.

The light next door from old man Yang and Aunt Yang turned on. The clear sound of their door opening could be heard, which showed that they were rushing over as soon as they heard the noise.

“Danhong, it’s me.”Ji Jianyun’s voice came from the darkness.

“Jianyun?” Su Danhong was surprised.

“Woof! Woof!” Xiao Hei was still baring his teeth.

“Xiao Hei, this is your master. Stand down,” Su Danhong hurried over and ordered.

She saw her brave man unexpectedly press the fierce Xiao Hei down next to him. Even if Xiao Hei was very tough, he was no match for her man.

However, Xiao Hei refused to admit defeat and continued to bare his teeth very ferociously.

But Xiao Hei seemed to understand Su Danhong’s orders and he emitted a loud whimper.

Ji Jianyun tentatively released the dog. Sure enough, Xiao Hei didn’t fight back. He shook the snow off his body and went to Su Danhong’s side. He raised his head to look up at him.

“What a good dog!” Ji Jianyun brushed off the snow on him and couldn’t help but nod.

“Of course he’s good. I raised him,” Su Danhong said and smiled. “Come into the house. Why are you back at such a time?”

Ji Jianyun looked up after brushing the snow off, and Su Danhong’s face appeared before him. He was stunned. “You are…Danhong?”

Su Danhong gave him an indignant look and was about to say something when old man Yang’s and Aunt Yang’s voices came: “Danhong, what’s going on? Why did Xiao Hei bark so loudly?”

“Uncle Yang, Aunt Yang, it’s all right. It was Jianyun coming back. Xiao Hei didn’t recognize him,” Su Danhong explained at once, and gave Ji Jianyun a push.

This dummy still hasn’t said a quick word to reassure the old couple.

“Uncle Yang, Aunt Yang, it’s me.” Ji Jianyun came to a realization and opened the door after glancing at Su Danhong. He climbed over the wall just now to come in, but as soon as he landed in the yard, Xiao Hei jumped on him and startled him.

“It’s Jianyun.” Uncle Yang and Aunt Yang breathed a sigh of relief when they saw that he had returned.

“It’s so late. Uncle, aunt, go back and rest. I’ll visit tomorrow,” Ji Jianyun said with a smile.

They came here as soon as possible, which showed that they really did look after his wife. It was only natural that he had this kind of attitude towards them.

Old man Yang and Aunt Yang responded okay again and again, and only then did they go back.

After closing the door, Ji Jianyun realized that Su Danhong had already gone to the kitchen.

When he came over, he saw her cooking dumplings for him. Soon a bowl of delicious dumplings came out. Su Danhong gave him the bowl. “Did you take the evening bus to come back? You’re hungry, right? Eat quickly. It’s filled with pork and mustard green.”

Ji Jianyun nodded in a daze and sat down.

Su Danhong did not waste the leftover water in the pot. She added a handful of firewood and said, “After you eat, you can soak your feet to ward off the cold.”

When she turned around, she saw that he was still sitting there foolishly and the dumplings had not moved. Suddenly, she angrily questioned, “What are you looking at? Haven’t you seen enough after looking for so long?”
