Chapter 18 – White-eyed Wolf

When eldest sister-in-law Su saw her mother-in-law coming out, she did not dare to stay any longer and left in disappointment.

Su Danhong said goodbye to her mother and went home with the eggs.

When she came back, Aunt Yang from next door was waiting for her with a basket full of eggs. She was delighted to see her back, but her face became a little stiff when she saw the eggs in her basket.

“Aunt Yang, what’s the matter?” Su Danhong asked with a smile.

When Aunt Yang heard that Su Danhong’s embroidery could make money, she also tried her best to learn. She was one of the last few who tried. However, they could not continue forward and all of them failed.

They had no issues doing a whole day’s work. Yet, if they wanted to sit all day and do embroidery, they would not be able to do it even if they wanted to. The main reason was that they could not embroider a single flower.

Even though it was a pity that their embroidery had not been successful, they still had a bit of a  revolutionary feeling.

Aunt Yang was quite close to Su Danhong, and she would usually pass by and complain about family issues.

“Danhong, I heard you bought a lot of meat. My grandson is gluttonous, and the pig in our village won’t be slaughtered for a few days. I just wanted to bring some eggs to exchange with a jin of your meat, but I see that now you don’t need eggs,” Aunt Yang said regretfully.

She looked at the eggs in her basket and guessed that there must be four or five jin of it. This was enough for the New Year.

“It’s all right, the eggs can last a long time. I’ll cut some for you, Aunt Yang,” Su Danhong said and opened the door to let her in.

Xiao Hei bared his teeth at Aunt Yang. Aunt Yang was scared and couldn’t help but say, “Xiao Hei was raised really well by you.”

Su Danhong smiled and gave a signal to Xiao Hei. He had a guarded look as he watched Aunt Yang. Although he no longer bared his teeth, he didn’t go back to his doghouse.

“He’s vigilant. I’ve visited several times, and he still doesn’t remember me,” Aunt Yang remarked.

Su Danhong continued to smile. Mother Ji came by frequently and Xiao Hei remembered her. Yet, when Su Danhong was not at home, Mother Ji could not enter the yard by herself because Xiao Hei would not allow it at all. Every time Mother Ji came over, Xiao Hei would bark a while to warn her before she entered the house.

Xiao Hei basically did not care about other people.

Father Ji and Mother Ji came once and brought something to feed Xiao Hei. It was a good bone, but Xiao Hei didn’t even take a look at it. It made Father Ji praise that he was a good dog.

When Aunt Yang came to the kitchen, Su Danhong cut a jin of beef and a jin of mutton for her.

“That’s enough, really enough, Danhong. You’ve given too much,” Aunt Yang said quickly.

The basket of eggs she brought here was no less than six jin, but six jin of eggs could only be exchanged for less than a jin of beef and a jin of mutton.

“Bring it back home, Aunt Yang. You and Uncle Yang should also make a stew to replenish yourselves,” Su Danhong said.

Aunt Yang couldn’t refuse and just took it. But she was in no hurry to go. They chatted and she stayed for an hour before she went back.

“You came back with so much meat?” When the old man Yang saw that his wife came back with two jin of meat. He glared and asked, “You didn’t go to take advantage of her, did you?”

“Of course not. It was Danhong who insisted on giving it to me. She asked me to bring it back and make some soup for you. She knew that it was you who jumped down and rescued Jianyun when he fell into the water during that big winter when he was a child,” Aunt Yang smiled and explained.

“This happened more than a decade ago, so why mention it?” Old man Yang was annoyed.

“Now that we have it, can you ask me to take it back? In any case, she’s right next door. If there’s anything we can do in the future, we’ll just help,” Aunt Yang said.

Old man Yang didn’t say anything.

Aunt Yang took out a knife and cutting board. While she began to chop the meat up, she could not help but say, “Say, how do you think she just changed? In the past, I thought she didn’t deserve Jianyun. A nice guy marrying such an annoying bitch? When you see it now, there is no limit to her filial piety. I think those two in the old Ji family have put on a lot of weight this winter.”

How could they not be fat? Their daughter-in-law thought of them whenever she had a mouthful of meat. From time to time, she would personally boil a pot of delicious meat and send it to them to add to their food. Occasionally, she would also send a pot of red jujube and wolfberry tea. Everyday they were nourished. How could it not be good?

Although the relationship between their two families was also very good, she could not help but feel a bit of grievance.

She had a lot of sons too. All four sons were married to wives, but the four daughter-in-laws were not as good as one of Su Danhong.

“Do you feel wronged after she gave you so much meat? In the past, they had not figured things out yet when they had just gotten married. Now that they are older, it’s different,” Old man Yang said.

When he came over to take a look, he was happy. “Yo, there is that much meat?”

“That’s right. I watched her specifically cut more meat.” Aunt Yang smiled. She just really wanted to say another family’s wife did not have to show filial piety to her.

As they spoke, Su Danhong was on the other side stewing a little meat for Xiao Hei. She used a little bit of soup to cook rice and gave the rest to Xiao Hei. Yet, even if she ate like this, she felt that she had put on some weight recently.

She stewed a pot of beef with the spiritual spring water and put a lot of medicinal herbs in it. This was what she wanted to use to make beef jerky. Father Ji liked it a lot and Ji Jianyun too. When he comes back, she would make him more food that would go well with alcohol.

Su Danhong kept half of the basket of eggs Aunt Yang brought over, and she brought the other half to the old Ji family. After all, she and Ji Jianyun could not finish it.

“Younger sister-in-law…”

When Su Danhong went over to the old Ji home, she saw Ji Yunyun. As soon as she addressed her, Ji Yunyun snorted and went back to her room.

Father Ji was not at home. Mother Ji came out just in time to see it and scolded, “A girl with no decency!” And she said to Su Danhong, “Danhong, don’t worry about her. She just has that kind of personality.”

Su Danhong smiled and did not say a word here. She gave her the eggs. “Mother, take these jin of eggs to eat with father.”

“There’s still some at home. Last time you brought over some that didn’t finish eating. Take these back and eat them yourself,” Mother Ji said at once.

Mother Ji also raised chickens, but she killed them all before winter.

“I also have several jin there, which is enough for me to eat with Jianyun,” Su Danhong said. She took the basket into the kitchen and took the eggs out one by one. She continued, “You and father should not save these eggs. Just buy some more after you finish.”

She didn’t stay there any longer and went back.

As soon as she left, Ji Yunyun ran from the room. “Mother, what did she bring this time?”

“She? What do you mean she? That’s your third sister-in-law!” Mother Ji glared at her. “She brought several jin of eggs.”

“Just eggs? She didn’t bring back any more meat?” Ji Yunyun frowned.

“Bring what meat? I just brought some back today,” Mother Ji fumed.

“What? Didn’t she take a lot back to her maternal family?!” Ji Yunyun rolled her eyes. “When third brother came back to marry such a thing, he was really unlucky. She was thinking about nourishing her maternal family all the time!”

Mother Ji immediately pinched her arm.

“Mother, what are you doing? Why are you pinching me?” Ji Yunyun could not stop herself from crying out in pain.

“White-eyed wolf1! No matter how much food I give you, it has been a waste! Go back to your room! One more look at you and I will be annoyed!” Mother Ji could not help but scold her.
